Sean Thomas was born Omaha, Nebraska, and spent much of his childhood in the vast open country of the Great Plains. Thomas studied art initially in Omaha, and then in Lawrence, Kansas. After college he moved to New York City and, turned to art direction.
After eight years art directing, Thomas turned to photography. His first series was for i-D magazine in 2008 capturing the early menswear creations of the young fashion designer Thom Browne. These pictures subsequently lead to his first international advertising campaign for the designer.
Thomas likes to tell stories, whether real or imagined, and enjoys combining fashion with reportage in his commissions for American and British Vogue, the Wall Street Journal Magazine, Holiday, Self Service, L’Étiquette, and Harpers France, among other publications. Between his frequent trips, all giving rise to extensive portfolios of images, from Central and South America to Cuba, Ethiopia and India, he has worked for leading fashion labels such as Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana, H&M, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Chloé, Michael Kors and Victoria’s Secret.
Thomas’ work is known for it’s candidness and his connection with the subjects he’s photographing. His photographs are energetic and life affirming.
